What is an apostille, and when do I need one?
An apostille is a certificate that verifies the authenticity of a document for use in Hague Convention countries. It’s commonly required for birth certificates, marriage licenses, power of attorney, and other official documents being used overseas.
What is the difference between an apostille and authentication?
An apostille is for documents being used in Hague Convention countries. Authentication is a more involved process required for non-Hague countries, involving state, federal, and embassy steps.
What is the authentication process?
The authentication process is used to verify U.S. documents for use in countries that are not part of the Hague Apostille Convention. It involves multiple steps to prove that the document is valid, properly executed, and legally recognized in both the U.S. and the destination country.
When do you need authentication instead of an apostille?
You’ll need authentication if your document is being used in a country that is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention (e.g., China, UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia).
What documents commonly require authentication?
- Birth, death, or marriage certificates
- Power of attorney
- FBI background checks
- Business documents
- School transcripts or diplomas
What is a notary?
A notary (or notary public) is a state-commissioned official authorized to verify identities, witness signatures, and administer oaths on legal documents. The notary’s role is to help prevent fraud and ensure that the signer is entering an agreement knowingly and willingly.
What does a notary do?
- Confirms the identity of the signer using valid photo ID
- Ensures the signer is signing voluntarily and understands the content
- Administers oaths or affirmations
- Applies an official notary seal or stamp
- Keeps a log of services (optional but recommended)
What kinds of documents require notarization?
- Power of Attorney (POA)
- Wills and Trusts
- Real Estate or Loan Documents
- Affidavits
- Contracts and Agreements

Why does notarization matter?
- Documents going to non-Hague countries require a multi-step authentication and consular legalization process. We handle this process, including the U.S. Department of State and foreign embassy steps.
